Fictional business you could make true! / Negocios ficticios, ¡que podrías realizar!

A while back I read a book called "The Club of Queer Trades" by Gilbert Keith Chesterton, in which a man discovers various businesses that were unique and not based on any other businesses already existent before. I thought some of the businesses were not a bad idea and perhaps you could also take some inspiration from these and other fictional businesses. Here's some examples:

From "The Club of Queer Trades" (spoiler alert: if you want to read the book, skip over to the next section)

• Adventure agency: if you've seen the movie "The Game", you know the concept. It's about crafting adventures or experiences for the clients, providing thrill.
• Delay agency: another service that allows clients to ask to distract someone (if, for example, you want your annoying colleague to not go to a crucial meeting, they'll distract him for as long as you pay).
• A "make you look witty" service: Here, the client pays to be trained to look smart or witty in social setting (so to make you popular). The service includes an actor that will help you get to the conversation points you practiced.
• Unusual living spaces: This is sort of an architecture firm that creates living spaces in unusual locations, like atop a tree. For clients who wish to live closer to nature.

From the movie Hitch

• A personalized "love" service. To help people get a chance with a potential life mate.

From Fight Club

• Well, a fight club. Another interesting service I've seen is "ZombieFit" (this actually exists), where people can train and workout to learn how to escape from zombies.

From The Simpsons

• Duff beer (already being done somewhere in the world)
• A store for the left handed 
• Pre-trained pet dogs

From The Island

• Interactive directories (specially in tourist-y cities)
• Ice cream cart (or any other food cart) that takes credit cards

From The Fifth Element

• Bunker style micro apartments
• Automated driver's licences
• Inter-car communication device 

From Minority Report

• Arcade venue for grown-ups (there's also one in Sex and the City, but I'm not sure it really exists). Another concept I liked is one I saw in Stockholm: coloring books for grown ups (complex drawings, vintage themes like Star Wars).

From The Jetsons

• Use of augmented reality to look better on video calls
• Moving walkways for private housing 

Let me know if you remember any other cool fictional concept (FEASIBLE, I know a teleporter would be great, but technology is not here yet. Though if you do develop it, you could be very very rich).

Hace algún tiempo leí un libro llamado "El club de los negocios raros" de Gilbert Keith Chesterton (puedes descargarlo en la liga), en el que un hombre descubre varios negocios que eran completamente nuevos y únicos, no estaban basados en ningún otro negocio que ya existiera antes de ellos. Algunos de los conceptos me parecieron interesantes y creo que tu también podrías tomar como inspiración algún negocio ficticio. Aquí tienes algunos ejemplos.

• Agencia de aventuras: si ya viste la película de El juego, conoces el concepto; es una agencia para crear aventuras para los clientes, usualmente aventuras que crean emoción.
• Agencia de retrasos: otro servicio que permite a los clientes contratar una distracción para alguien más (si, por ejemplo, quieres que tu compañero de trabajo molesto no vaya a una reunión importante, la agencia le creará una distracción por el tiempo que pagues).
• Un servicio para hacerte ver ingenioso: este servicio ayuda a los clientes a parecer inteligentes e ingeniosos en situaciones sociales (para aumentar tu popularidad). El servicio incluye un actor que te ayudará a llegar a los puntos conversacionales que practicaste.
• Viviendas inusuales: esta es una agencia de arquitectura/construcción enfocada a personas que busquen locaciones inusuales (por ejemplo, en la cima de un árbol); para clientes que buscan vivir más cerca de la naturaleza.

De Hitch

• Un servicio de "amor" personalizado. Una consultoría que ayuda a los clientes a encontrar y conquistar a su pareja.

• Pues, un club de pelea. Otro servicio interesante es el de "ZombieFit" (esto realmente existe), donde los clientes entrenan y hacen ejercicios enfocados a saber cómo escapar de zombies.

• Cerveza Duff (ya hubo un emprendedor que realizó este concepto en alguna parte del mundo)
• Una tienda con productos para zurdos
• Mascotas pre-entrenadas

De La Isla

• Directorios interactivos (especialmente en ciudades turísticas)
• Carrito de helados (o de cualquier otro tipo de comida) que acepte tarjetas de crédito

De El Quinto Elemento

• Micro departamentos tipo búnker
• Licencias de manejo automatizadas
• Dispositivo de comunicación entre carros

De Minority Report: Sentencia Previa

• Establecimiento con videojuegos para adultos (un concepto similar también aparece en Sexo en la Ciudad, pero no estoy segura de que exista). Otro concepto que vi en Estocolmo es libros para colorear para adultos (dibujos complejos, temas vintage como la Guerra de las Galaxias).

De Los Supersónicos

• Uso de realidad aumentada para verte bien en las video-llamadas
• Uso de bandas transportadoras en las casas 

Avísame si recuerdas algún otro concepto ficticio interesante (y que sea POSIBLE, sé que un teletransportador sería muy bueno, pero la tecnología aún no llega ahí. Por supuesto, si lo desarrollas, podrías hacerte muy muy rico).

Easy Movie Theater / Cine fácil

I lived in Sweden a year and I've been living in Spain four months now. And in all that time, I haven't been to the movies once. It's just too expensive for students or people on a budget (like entrepreneurs). I think there is a way to reduce overhead and make it cheaper for people. I think people would go even more. The idea is to create an "Easy" (borrowed from EasyJet and EasyHotels) Movie Theater where people could buy their tickets online, print them, use a barcode scanner to get into the theater (or you could use ATMs to sell the tickets at the entrance), and the concesion stand could be a 7/11 (or another convenience store chain) outside the theater.

The advantages of this is that you could save a lot of money in salaries and it would also be possible to extend the service hours (midnight shows, open on holidays, you get the idea).  

Some time ago I had also thought about having a People's Choice day, where people could choose the movie one day of the week, or the month. It could be old movies (like The Exorcist, StarWars, Back to the Future) that we would love to watch on the big screen again.

If you want to start this business, I think an easier way to do this would be to rent a facility, buy some IKEA sofas, a projector and a good surround system and get started with the oldies, there's definitely a market. Then go from there!

Viví en Suecia durante un año y he estado viviendo en España por cuatro meses; en todo este tiempo, no he ido al cine una sola vez. Simplemente es demasiado caro para estudiantes o personas que viven con un presupuesto limitado (como los emprendedores). Me parece que hay formas de reducir los gastos fijos y así lograr captar más mercado. La idea es crear un Cine "Fácil" (como EasyJet, Vivaaerobus, etc.) donde las personas pudieran comprar sus boletos en línea, imprimirlos y utilizar un lector de código de barras para entrar (o incluso podrían ser cajeros en la entrada) y se tuviera un 7/11 (u otra cadena de tiendas de conveniencia) afuera del teatro para comprar dulces, palomitas, refrescos, etc. 

La ventaja de esto es que podrías ahorrar mucho en salarios y también sería posible extender el horario de servicio (funciones de media noche, abrir en festivos). 

Hace algún tiempo también había pensado que sería bueno que los cines ofrecieran cine a la carta una noche a la semana o al mes, donde las personas pudieran votar para elegir una película que les gustaría volver a ver en la pantalla grande (como El Exorcista, La Guerra de las Galaxias, Volver al futuro). 

Si quieres empezar este negocio, creo que una forma más sencilla sería empezar sería rentar un local, comprar sillones de IKEA, un proyector, un buen sistema de sonido y empezar con un club de cine (podría ser con películas clásicas), en definitiva hay un mercado para esto. ¡Y sigue desde ahí!

Ideas for dinner / Ideas para la cena

When I go grocery shopping, I usually make a list of ingredients we'll need based on what we're having the next couple of days, and I always have more problems with dinners than any other meals. I sometimes even google "ideas for dinner" and most of the suggestions are not great. So, to help others like me, here's a list of meals you can make for quick, easy and tasty dinners (with recipes):

"Molletes"

For each serving, you'll need: one small baguette (like this one, in Mexico we call them "pan francés"), ¹/₃ cup of refried beans, grated cheese to taste, (and if you like, you can add pre-cooked chorizo or bacon).

1. First, preheat the refried beans, cut the bread in half horizontally, spread the beans, cover with the grated cheese and the chorizo or bacon. 
2. Put in the oven at 200° F for 10 minutes (until cheese is melted and a little golden). Serve hot.

Smoked salmon crostinis

For 2 servings, you'll need: 180 grams of smoked salmon in slices, cream cheese, half a lemon, pepper, one medium baguette. We usually pair this with white wine.

1. Cut the baguette in ½ inch slices, toast in the oven, turning once. 
2. Remove bread from the oven, spread cream cheese in every slice (to taste), divide the salmon slices and place on top of each bread slice. 
3. Pepper the crostinis to taste, and add a few drops of lemon juice. 

Spanish Tortilla

For 2 servings, you'll need: 3 large eggs, 4 medium potatoes, ¹/₃ small onion, 2 tablespoons olive oil, salt.

1. First you must bake the potatoes, I have to admit I cheat and cook them in the microwave oven (rinse them thoroughly, then place in a plastic bag with water, close the bag with a knot. Put in microwave high for 6 to 8 minutes, check to see if they are done). Meanwhile, chop the onion, set aside; mix the eggs in a bowl, salt to taste, set aside. 
2. When the potatoes are baked, peel them carefully and slice thin. In a medium pan, preheat the olive oil, fry the onion, when the onion is a little golden, add the potatoes. 
3. Transfer the potatoes and onion to the bowl (leave the frying pan in medium heat) and mix with the egg, make sure it's an even mix. 
4. Lower the heat and pour the mix into the pan, distribute evenly. Cover and cook for about 5 minutes, then flip the tortilla (you can use the pan cover to remove from the pan and flip). Cook this side for 5 more minutes.
5. Serve hot. I usually accompany this with bread. 

To make it more interesting, I add slices of spanish chorizo in step 4, after the even distribution.

My version of chop suey

For 2 people, you'll need: 2 carrots, ½ broccoli, 1 cup of green beans,  4-5 small mushrooms, 200 grams of chicken or beef (or a little bit of each), 300 grams of soygerm (if you can't get them, substitute for one pack of ramen noodles), 1 tablespoon soy sauce, juice of 1 lemon, salt, 1 teaspoon vegetable cooking oil, water.

1. Clean the broccoli, green beans and mushrooms, cut into pieces, set aside. Peel and slice the carrots, set aside. Cut the chicken or been into small chunks.
2. In a pot, heat 2 qts. of water to bring to a boil. 
3. In large pan, preheat the oil in high heat, cook the chunks of chicken or been, salt to taste. When the chicken or beef is completely sealed, pour in the carrots and broccoli, cook for about 3 minutes. Add the green beans and mushrooms, soy sauce and lemon juice.
4. Place the soygerm in the boiling water for 6 minutes. Drain and mix with in the pan with everything else.
5. Serve hot.

To make it more interesting, I add peanuts at the end of step 3.

Cuando voy de compras al supermercado, normalmente hago una lista de ingredientes que vamos a utilizar en las comidas de los siguientes días, pero siempre tengo problemas pensando en ideas para la cena. Incluso he buscado "ideas para cenar" en Google y las sugerencias no me han encantado. Así que para ayudar a otros como yo, aquí les van algunas recetas que yo hago para cenar:

Molletes

Por cada persona, van a necesitar: un pan francés, ¹/₃ de taza de frijoles refritos, queso rallado (puedes agregar chorizo o tocino ya cocido).

1. Precalienta los frijoles refritos. 
2. Corta el pan a la mitad horizontalmente, unta con frijoles, el chorizo o tocino y cubre con queso.
3. Pon los molletes en el horno a 90° C por 10 minutos (hasta que el queso se haya derretido y esté un poco dorado). Sirve saliente.

Crostinis de salmón ahumado

Para 2 personas, necesitas: 180 gramos de salmón ahumado rebanado, queso crema, medio limón, pimienta, un baguette mediano. Yo lo acompaño con vino blanco afrutado.

1. Corta el baguette diagonalmente en rebanadas de 1 cm, tueste ligeramente en el horno, volteando una vez.
2. Saque el pan del horno, unte con queso crema, distribuya el salmón rebanado y coloque sobre el pan. 
3. Pimente los crostinis al gusto y agregue algunas gotas de limón a cada una. 

Tortilla Española

Para 2 porciones necesitas: 3 huevos grandes, 4 papas medianas para cocer, ¹/₃ de cebolla pequeña, 2 cucharadas de aceite de oliva, sal.

1. Primero hay que cocinar las papas, tengo que admitir que yo hago trampa y las cocino en el microondas (lava bien las papas, colócalas en una bolsa de plástico con agua, cierra la bolsa con un nudo. Mételas al microondas en Alto de 6 a 8 minutos, checa que estén bien cocidas). Mientras, pica la cebolla y aparta. Mezcla los huevos en un tazón para mezclar, agrega sal al gusto y separa. 
2. Cuando las papas estén listas, pélalas cuidadosamente y corta en rebanadas delgadas. En un sartén mediano calienta el aceite de oliva y pon a freír la cebolla. Cuando esté doradita, agrega las papas. 
3. Transfiere las papas y cebolla al tazón y mezcla bien con el huevo. Deja el sartén a fuego medio. 
4. Baja un poco el fuego al sartén y vacía en él la mezcla de huevo, papa y cebolla, distribuye uniformemente (si quieres un sabor más interesante, puedes agregar algunas rebanadas de chorizo español encima). Cubre el sartén con su tapa y cocina por 5 minutos, luego voltea la tortilla (puedes ayudarte con la tapa del sartén). Cocina el segundo lado por 5 minutos más.
5. Sirve caliente. Normalmente acompaño esto con pan.

Mi versión de chop suey

Para dos personas, yo uso: 2 zanahorias, ½ brócoli (brécol), 1 taza de judias verdes, 4-5 champiñones pequeños, 200 gramos de pollo o carne (o un poco de ambos), 300 gramos de germinado de soya (si no puedes conseguirlo, puedes sustituirlo por un paquete de ramen noodles), 1 cucharada de salsa de soya, jugo de 1 limón, sal, 1 cucharada de aceite vegetal, agua.

1. Limpia el brócoli, las judias verdes y los champiñones, cortalos en pedacitos, aparta. Pela y rebana las zanahorias, aparta. Corta el pollo o carne en cuadritos.
2. En una olla, pon a calentar 2 litros de agua, déjala que hierva. 
3. En un sartén grande, precalienta el aceite a fuego alto, cocina ahí el pollo o carne, agrega sal al gusto. Cuando el pollo o carne esté sellado, agrega las zanahorias y el brócoli, cocina por 3 minutos. Agrega después las judias verdes, los champiñones, la salsa de soya y el jugo de limón. 
4. Pon el germinado de soya en el agua hirviendo por 6 minutos. Escurre y agréga al sartén con los demás ingredientes. 
5. Sirve caliente.

Para hacerlo un poco más interesante, yo agrego cacahuates al final del paso 3.

Mobile gym / Gimnasio móvil

Companies like Google and Facebook pamper their employees with super comfortable work spaces, which include cafeterias, play rooms, gyms and more. Nevertheless, most companies around the world don't have the financial capabilities to offer these perks. But what if you could rent a mobile gym? You could serve several companies in one geographical area by distributing available times and companies would gain happier, healthier employees.

The idea is to equip a trailer or truck with basic training machines and a locker room (where people can shower and go back to work) and have trainers to aid gym-goers. The investment would probably be a little less than a regular gym, and if you are a trainer (if you are, for example, an aerobics, yoga, pilates or kickbox teacher) you could start by offering individual courses and go from there!

Empresas como Google y Facebook ponen la barra muy alta para las demás empresas en el mundo en cuanto a cómo consienten a sus empleados, les ofrecen instalaciones cómodas, cafeterías, áreas de ocio, gimnasios y más. Sin embargo, la mayoría de las empresas alrededor del mundo no tienen la capacidad financiera para ofrecer estos beneficios a sus empleados. Pero, podría haber una opción: rentar gimnasios móviles, asignando horarios a las diferentes empresas. De esta forma, varias empresas en un área geográfica delimitada podrían beneficiarse con empleados más sanos y contentos.

La idea es equipar un trailer o camión con máquinas de entrenamiento y un vestuario (donde los empleados puedan tomar un baño antes de regresar a trabajar), además de entrenadores que asistan a los deportistas. La inversión sería posiblemente un poco menos que abrir un gimnasio normal, y si eres un entrenador profesional (de aerobics, yoga, pilates, kickbox, etc.), podrías empezar ofreciendo cursos individuales e ¡ir creciendo!

Garlic saver / Salva-ajos

My husband and I like to cook, sometime we make chicken soup or other meals which include garlic in the recipe, but then you have to locate the clove to avoid bitting it. I think it would be nice to have a garlic saver to make it easier to pull the garlic from the pot with something similar to the tea infusers (example here).

I think the mesh should be a little bigger and you can live without the little chain, it's just to make it easier to locate.

A mi esposo y a mi nos gusta cocinar; a veces hacemos cosas como caldo de pollo, el cual incluye ajo en la cocción, pero después tienes que localizarlo y retirarlo antes de servir para evitar morderlo. Creo que sería una buena idea tener un salva-ajos para ayudarte a sacar el ajo de la comida, algo parecido a los infusores de té (algo como esto).

Me parece que se tendrían que hacer algunos ajustes, como que la malla sea más grande y posiblemente no necesite la cadena. Es solo para facilitar localizar y retirar.

Rain detector / Detector de lluvia

Imagine you have clothes hanging to dry, then it slowly starts to rain, but you're watching tv or listening to music on your iPod (or iPhone), and when you realize, the rain has started to pour. I know in the States most people have a dryer, but here in Bilbao there's not a lot of space and the electricity is expensive, so many of us have to hang dry our clothes. Also, it rains a lot. Sometimes very unexpectedly. I would very gladly purchase a rain detector (with an alarm), that would beep when wet, or if you wanna make it smarter, beep when wet AND have clothes hanging AND I'm home.

I guess it could have some additional uses, maybe doing some research somewhere where it rains a lot you could find other uses for it.

Imagina que tienes tu ropa en el tendedero para que se seque; tu estás viendo televisión o escuchando música en tu iPod (o iPhone), y cuando te das cuenta, ya está lloviendo a cántaros. Sé que en Estados Unidos la gran mayoría de las personas tienen secadoras, pero aquí en Bilbao no hay mucho espacio para poner una y la electricidad es costosa, por lo que la mayoría de las personas tenemos que colgar nuestra ropa al sol. También llueve mucho, a veces inesperadamente. Yo gustosamente compraría un detector de lluvia que me avisara cuando se moje; incluso mejor si es un poco inteligente y avise cuando: se moja Y tengo ropa tendida Y estoy en casa.

Creo que este detector podría tener otros usos, solo habría que hacer un poco de investigación en alguna ciudad donde llueva mucho.

Hospital vending machine / Máquina dispensadora en hospitales

If you've ever been living in a hospital with a relative, you will probably understand this concept. Most of the times, we get there unexpectedly and have to stay there with someone. In public hospitals, sometimes you even have to bring your own supplies for you and the patient. And for private hospitals, you may find some of these in the gift shop, but they close! So, I think it would be good to have a vending machine with the following:

• Rubber slippers (so patients can take a shower)
• Disposable slippers (for visitors who need to change their shoes)
• Hand saniters
• Toilet paper
• Paper tissues (like Kleenex)
• Qtips
• Toothbrush
• Toothpaste
• Soap
• Combs
• Deodorant
• Wet wipes
• Inflatable pillows
• Aspirin
• Weight pillow (needed to weigh down the patient)
• Femenine hygiene products

Potential entrepreneur profile: has or can get a contact with a hospital administration, has money to invest.

Si alguna vez has estado viviendo en un hospital con un familiar, probablemente entiendes este concepto. Muchas veces llegamos a los hospitales inesperadamente y tenemos que quedarnos ahí. En hospitales públicos a veces se requiere que tu mismo traigas estos objetos para ti y tu familiar enfermo. En los hospitales privados posiblemente te venden estos artículos en la tienda de regalos, pero ¡estas cierran!. Por eso creo que sería bueno tener máquinas expendedoras que tengan:

Take a foreign concept! / ¡Toma una idea de otro país!

Far too often I find myself thinking: this would work great back home! So I snap a photo and put it on my list. Here are some examples of things I've seen and that could work in other settings (maybe where you live!). So take a look, get inspired and adapt!

1. Coloring books for grown ups (yes, some people like to color! I guess it could be therapeutic)
2. Warm cookie delivery (sort of like Domino's, but with hand made cookies)
3. High end hand made cosmetics (like Lush. Latinamerican countries have many natural resources and it could be also an organic, fair trade company)
4. High end convenience stores (I saw this in Paris, across the street from the Pompidou, it's great because you have better quality and it's quick to shop, good for busy business areas)
5. In Spain, the IKEA store in Barakaldo offers van rentals. I didn't see this in Sweden, but it would be great to have them!
6. 24 hour gym.People get inside using a card and code.
7. Chocolate with churros (first time I read this, I thought it was a misspell, in Mexico we have churros with chocolate, check out the picture below. I think this would rock in Mexico, maybe also in your  country people like chocolate and fried dough)

8. Convenience store in a vending machine (no employees full time, only delivery people. no place to clean up, less chance to get robbed)

Me pasa con frecuencia que veo un negocio y pienso que sería genial si alguien lo llevara a México, así que le tomo una foto y lo agrego a mi lista. Aquí les paso algunos ejemplos de negocios que creo que funcionarían en otros ambientes(¡posiblemente funcionarían donde vives tú!). Así que checa estas opciones, toma un poco de inspiración y ¡adapta la idea a tu mercado!

1. Libros de colorear para adultos (sí, a mucha gente le gusta colorear. Supongo que puede ser desestresante)
2. Galletitas calientes a domicilio (algo como Domino's Pizza, pero con galletas hechas a mano)
3. Línea de cosméticos de lujo hechos a mano (como Lush. Muchos países Latinoamericanos tienen recursos naturales, incluso podría tener el valor agregado de ser orgánico o de comercio justo)
4. Tiendas de conveniencia de lujo (ví una tienda así en Paris, frente al museo Pompidou, es interesante porque tiene productos de mejor calidad y es rápido para comprar, me parece una buena idea para áreas de negocio con muchos ejecutivos con prisa)
5. En España, la tienda IKEA de Barakaldo ofrece servicio de renta de camionetas tipo van. Nunca ví algo así en Suecia (lugar de origen de IKEA), pero me parece que sería algo muy útil.
6. Gimnasio abierto 24 horas. Los clientes entran utilizando una tarjeta y un código secreto.
7. Chocolate con churros (la primera vez que leí esto, pensé que estaba mal escrito, en México tenemos churros rellenos de chocolate, pero checa la foto. Creo que esto funcionaría en México, posiblemente en tu país a la gente también le gusta el chocolate y la masa frita)

8. Tiendas de conveniencia en una máquina expendedora (no necesitas empleados de tiempo completo, solo personal de entrega; no hay mucho que limpiar, menos posibilidades de un asalto)

Things to do in Taipei / Que hacer en Taipei

"Isla Formosa, Taiwan will touch your heart" played the ad in the airplane when we landed in this beautiful country, and it really does! The food is great and the people are the friendliest I've come across (and I'm latin!). People stand in line to get into the subway wagons and are very respectful of laws. We went there for business and pleasure, so we had time to visit some landmarks in the city:


Places

1. The Taipei 101: Tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2010, the building is gorgeous, it has one of the fastest elevators in the world, you can feel on top of the world for a few minutes. There's also a coral collection not to be missed. Outside, you can find a LOVE sculpture.
2. Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall: The arquitechture is impressive, and it's a lovely demonstration of affection to their former leader. 
3. The National Palace Museum: The art is completely different to that found in european museums, they have miniature sculptures, manuscripts, religious figures, coral, jewelry, clothing, you'll be immersed in the culture of this country in no time. Take a break and have a cup of tea in the tea room upstairs.
4. Longshan Temple: One of the oldest temples in town, this place hosts a variety of religions. The smell of incense is intoxicating (in a good way). No matter who you believe in, you must bow your head as a signal of respect.
5. Confucius Temple: Another great temple, people come here to ask for miracles, hang yours in the wall!
6. The markets: whatever you do, do not go to Longshan's night market! there are other night markets more tourist friendly. There are also several malls hidden in ordinary looking buildings, you might be pleasantly surprised! If you want something more traditional, visit Danshui, where you can get more traditional crafts.

Eat

At first, you may be a little overwhelmed by the smell of the city, there are many food carts and the spices are really strong, but you get used to it.

Do not miss the dumplings, the hot pots, the pearl milk tea (you'll fall in love with it, there is nothing like it on earth, really, I'd go live there just for that), the tea (try the Oolong or Jasmin), and the dried oolong tea plum (they make a great gift if you want to bring something traditional, rare and delicious).

What to wear

We went in the summer, and it was unbelievably hot, jeans were too much. Bring breezy shorts, tshirts, skirts, dresses, light fabrics, crocs if you have 'em (I couldn't stand walking around in sneakers). You also need to carry an umbrella all the time, or you might have to buy one from a street vendor.

La comida es deliciosa, y la gente es lo más amigable que he conocido (y eso que soy latina); la gente hace fila para entrar al metro y respetan mucho las leyes. Nuestro viaje era una combinación de negocios y placer, así que tuvimos  oportunidad de ver los lugares más icónicos de la ciudad:


Lugares

1. Taipei 101: Fue el edificio más alto del mundo desde el 2004 hasta el 2010, el edificio es precioso, tiene uno de los elevadores más rápidos del mundo, y puedes sentirte en la cima del mundo por unos minutos. También tiene una colección de coral que no puedes dejar de ver. Afuera puedes encontrar una escultura de LOVE.
2. Edificio conmemorativo Chiang Kai-shek: La arquitectura es impresionante, es una bonita demostración de afecto a su líder desaparecido. 
3. Museo del Palacio Nacional: El arte encontrado en este museo es completamente distinta a la europea, tienen esculturas miniatura, figuras religiosas, manuscritos, arte en coral, joyería, ropa, te encontrarás sumergido en la cultura del país. Toma un descanso con una taza de té en el cuarto de té en el piso superior.
4. Templo Longshan: Es uno de los templos más antiguos de la ciudad, y no tiene una denominación única, el olor del incienso es intoxicante (en un buen sentido). No importa a quien adores, en estos templos se debe inclinar la cabeza en señal de respeto.
5. Templo de Confucio: Otro hermoso templo, a donde las personas van a pedir milagros, ¡cuelga el tuyo en la pared!
6. Los  mercados: hagas lo que hagas, no vayas al mercado nocturno de Longshan. Hay otros mercados nocturnos más amigables para los turistas. También existen centros comerciales escondidos en edificios que parecen ordinarios, ¡puedes llevarte una grata sorpresa!Si buscas artesanías tradicionales, visita Danshui.

Comida

Al principio, el olor de la comida en las calles puede ser muy fuerte, hay muchos carritos de comida y las especies son potentes, pero después te acostumbras al olor.

No dejes de probar los dumplings, los cazos calientes, el té de perla (juro que lo vas a adorar, en serio, yo me mudaría ahí solo por eso), los tés tradicionales (prueba el Oolong o el de Jazmín), y si tienes oportunidad, prueba las ciruelas secas en té oolong (son un regalo idea, si quieres algo tradicional, exótico y delicioso).

Qué ropa llevar

Cuando fuimos en verano, el calor era imposible tolerar un par de jeans. Si vas en esta época, lleva pantalones cortos, camisetas, faldas, vestidos, telas ligeras y si tienes, un par de crocs (da mucho calor caminar con tenis). También necesitas llevar un paraguas todo el tiempo, o vas a terminar comprando uno en la calle.

Things to do in Paris / Que hacer en Paris

Paris is a great tourist city, it has museums for all ages and interests, good public transportation, restaurants, shopping, even an amusement park (Disney Paris is about half hour outside the city center); you name it, they have it. So if you're going to the City of Light for the first time and don't have a lot of time, here's a list of things I recommend.

Places

1. The Eiffel Tower: Go, take pictures, then get out. I don't recommend waiting a 2 hour line to go up. If you want a nice view (and a picture where the camera is not on the floor to get the full tower) go to Trocadero. 
2. The Louvre: Choose the art you really want to see, search for it, and get out. After 7 hours of looking at paintings and not being through half the place, they all look the same (if you're not an art student or professional). At the end, I just wanted to sit down and not see anything else. To avoid overload, pick your battles.
3. Other museums: If you like modern art, check out the Pompidou, it's fantastic, and the art displays are a good change. The museum is great and you get a nice view of the city. I also recommend visiting smaller, specialized museums, like the Picasso or Dalí museums. Check out the schedules beforehand, some of the museums offer free entrance (the Louvre used to offer friday nights) or discounts some days a week.
4. Champs Elysees: As a first time visitor, you must go to the Place de la Concorde, walk up to the Arc de Triomphe, take tons of pictures (for even better pics, go at night), check out the overly priced clothing and jewelery. But don't buy, eat or drink!
5. Painter's square: worth it just because of the scenery (cute houses, flowers, bistros), plus the Dalí Museum and the Basilique du Sacre Cour are a few steps from here.

Eat

You have to try sweet pastries, I recommend the chouquettes, macaroons, éclairs and crêppes (but try to go for something not-chocolate, like sugar and lemon).

If you don't have a lot of time to see the city, I suggest you eat on the go. Get into any pâtisserie and choose something salty (they usually have baguettes with ham and cheese, pizza slices and other options. If it's cold, just tell them: chaud, s'il vous plait, they'll warm it up for you) and eat in line for a museum or just walking around the city. Leave the fancy restaurants for dinner.

París es una estupenda ciudad para los turistas, tiene museos para todas las edades e intereses, buen sistema de transporte público, restaurantes, tiendas e incluso un parque de diversiones (Disney Paris se encuentra a media hora del centro de la ciudad); lo que pidas, está ahí. Si vas a la Ciudad de la Luz por primera vez y tienes poco tiempo, aquí tienes algunas recomendaciones:

Lugares

1. La Torre Eiffel: Ve, toma fotografías y sal de ahí. No recomiendo esperar 2 horas para subir si tienes el tiempo contado. Si quieres una buena vista de la torre (y fotos donde la cámara no esté en el piso para que salga la torre completa), ve a Trocadero. 
2. Museo Louvre: Selecciona aquellas obras que realmente te interesa ver, búscalas y sal de ahí. Después de 7 horas de ver pinturas y saber que no llevas ni la mitad, todo se ve igual (a menos que seas estudiante o profesional del arte). Al final, lo único que quería era sentarme y no volver a ver una pintura. Para evitar agobiarte, escoge tus batallas.
3. Otros museos: Si te gusta el arte moderno, ve al Pompidou, es fantástico, y las instalaciones de arte son una buena alternativa a las pinturas. El museo es muy bonito y tiene una gran vista de la ciudad. También recomiendo que visites museos especializados, como el Picasso o el Dalí. Revisa los horarios con anticipación, algunos museos ofrecen descuentos o entradas gratis en ciertos días y horarios (el Louvre era gratis los viernes por la noche).
4. Los Campos Elíseos: Si es tu primera visita, tienes que ir desde la Plaza de la Concordia, caminar hasta el Arco del Triunfo, tomar muchas fotos (para mejores fotos, ve de noche), ver la ropa y joyería incomprable. Pero no comas, bebas o compres ahí.
5. La plaza de los pintores: vale la pena ir solo por la vista, y queda muy cerca del museo de Dalí y de la Basílica del Sagrado Corazón.

Comida

La panadería francesa es de lo mejor, personalmente recomendaría que probaras los chouquettes, los macaroons, los éclairs y las crepas (dale la oportunidad a un sabor que no sea chocolate, como el de azúcar con limón).

Si no tienes mucho tiempo para ver la ciudad, sugiero que comas algo que te permita seguir explorando. Solo tienes que entrar a alguna panadería y pedir algo salado (casi siempre tienen baguettes con jamón y queso, pedazos de pizza y otras opciones. Si parece estar frío, pide: chaud, s'il vous plait, para que te lo calienten); lleva tu comida a la fila del museo o simplemente a rondar por la ciudad. Deja los restaurantes formales para las cenas. 

Robot shopping cart / Carrito de compras robot

The world's population is aging and every day people's life span is increased. This brings a LOT of opportunities for new businesses, but in this post I'll only tell you about one. In Sweden we were living in the suburbs, many of our neighbors were elderly and we all use the public transport for our daily chores. Whenever we went to the supermarket, I watched frail ladies bend to put their groceries in their carts (and I presume they had to do this all over at home to put things away). I know there are robots which function enough to follow a person and to go up and down.

So this business idea is for someone who knows about mechanics, robotics, engineering or something in between. Make a cart, kind of like this one, but with the capability to follow their owner, and go up and down to make it easier to put and pull things. There is a good market and there will be a bigger one in a few years. Hey, I'd totally buy it!

La población del mundo está envejeciendo y cada día la esperanza de vida aumenta. Esto trae MUCHAS oportunidades para nuevos negocios, pero en esta publicación solamente discutiré una. Vivía en un suburbio de Suecia donde la mayoría de nuestros vecinos eran personas mayores y todos utilizábamos el transporte público para realizar tareas diarias. Cada vez que iba al supermercado, veía a viejecitas frágiles agachándose para guardar sus compras (y te aseguro que lo volvían a hacer en casa para guardarlas). Sé que hay robots lo suficientemente funcionales para realizar funciones básicas como seguir a alguien o moverse de arriba a abajo.

Esta idea de negocios es para alguien que sepa de mecánica, robótica, ingeniería o alguna combinación de esto. Hagan un carrito (algo como esto) que tenga la capacidad de seguir a su dueño, subir y bajar para facilitar poner y sacar cosas de ahí. Ya hay un buen mercado para esto, y te aseguro que habrá más en unos cuantos años. Oye, ¡yo lo compraría!

All year round seasonal pastry shop / Tienda de pastelillos estacionales

When I was living in Sweden, I noticed they have a variety of seasonal pastries that, come the season, are available everywhere. Which is great if you live there, but if you're visiting, you just hear about these amazing pastries and miss the chance to taste them. Examples:

I guess in many countries, the same thing happens, there are some special or traditional recipes you can only get a limited time a year (in Sweden this was true even for doughnuts!). But maybe there is an opportunity to sell traditional treats for tourists, and even post explanations about the traditions as a decoration, what do you think? Which traditional (and limited time) treats would you like to see year round?

Recipe # 2 French toast / Receta # 2 Pan tostado a la francesa

Today my laptop was surprised to be on before breakfast, but this was due to my response to my husband's "what do you want for breakfast?", I said  "how about french toast?". Neither of us knew how to do it, so we googled it and found this video:

Mi computadora portátil se sorprendió al verse encendida antes del desayuno el día de hoy, pero fué culpa de mi respuesta a mi esposo cuando me pregunto "¿qué quieres de desayunar hoy?", le dije "¿qué te parece french toast?". Ninguno de los dos habíamos hecho pan tostado a la francesa antes, así que lo buscamos en Google y encontramos el video que aparece ahí arriba. Esta en inglés, por lo que aquí tienen la traducción:

Ingredientes
Medio pan francés (de preferencia que tenga uno o dos días, para que esté un poco duro)
2 huevos
Sal
Canela
½ taza de leche
1 cucharadita de vainilla
Mantequilla para freír


Instrucciones

1. Se hace un batido (tipo natilla) con los huevos, leche, vainilla, una pizca de sal, canela al gusto.
2. Se corta el pan en rebanadas y se remoja con la mezcla. El secreto es lograr que el pan absorba toda la mezcla para que quede esponjoso.
3. Se precalienta el horno a 200 grados celsius. Mientras, se doran los panes remojados en un sartén con mantequilla (aproximadamente 3 minutos cada lado).
4. Se transfieren las rebanadas ya tostadas a una bandeja para hornear y se cocinan en el horno por 12-15 minutos.

El centro va a quedar suave y esponjoso, con el exterior crujiente y delicioso. Acompáñelas con un poco de miel. (puedes ver fotos de mi experimento arriba). La casa quedó con un rico olor a vanilla y canela. ¡Espero que prueben esta receta!

Entertainment rental at airports / Renta de entretenimiento en aeropuertos

Going back to the being green and reading, I do think there is an opportunity for a store (or even a vending machine, like redbox) in airports that rent out stuff you might need waiting in the airport, in flight or during your vacations (waterproof books for the beach, for example). It could also be a buy with option to rent, let me explain: you buy a book, read it during your vacation, then when going back, you return the book and get cash back.

Another rental option could be for DVD players, portable games or tablet computers with some movies loaded on them to kill some time during the wait.

Potential entrepreneur profile: You have cash to invest in equipment, rental space and insurance.

You'll need: This business is all about location, location, location!

Regresando al tema de ser "ecológico" y leer, creo que hay una oportunidad para una tienda (podría incluso ser un dispensador automático, como las utilizadas por redbox) en los aeropuertos donde se puedan rentar objetos para utilizar durante la espera, el vuelo o las vacaciones (libros a prueba de agua para las vacaciones en la playa, por ejemplo). Podría ser también una compra con opción a renta, te explico: el cliente compra el libro, lo utiliza durante sus vacaciones y cuando vaya de regreso, puede devolver el libro y  recuperar parte de su inversión.

Otros artículos para rentar: reproductores de DVD portátiles, consolas de videojuego portátiles, computadoras tipo tablet con algunas películas pre-cargadas para ver durante la espera.

Peer to peer book rental website / Sitio de renta de libros entre particulares

Imagine a mix breed between Netflix and eBay, but for books. I love books, but sometimes it aches me to pay (in the last case 22 EUR) to read a book I know I'll only read once and then dust away in my bookshelf (or in an obscure storage box). There's still a great amount of people who like to read books in a printed format, but this would have the added benefit of also being "green" (less books printed). To make it even greener, you could set up reading clubs where the idea is to exchange the goods locally.

Potential entrepreneur profile: someone who loves books, paired with someone who knows how to setup and mantain a website.

You'll need: a website, books to get started.

Time-share for appliances / Tiempo compartido de electrodomésticos

Living spaces in Europe are expensive, in Spain I pay three times as much for an apartment here than I would in Mexico... for half the space. So, when it comes to storing stuff, there's not much space to waste. So, storing appliances you rarely use is something to consider carefully. To make things easier (and cheaper), I was thinking about a business idea: time share appliances. You know, stuff like really big vacuum cleaners, maybe a bread maker, a margarita blender. This could be done in two ways:

1. Set up a website where people can create their own groups, set their own goals, maybe charge for subscription. Or,
2. Set up your own store, rent your own appliances (like Hertz does with cars). You could even start by renting out stuff you alredy have and might be useful for others. Even better if you currently have an appliance store, this could add a business model to your offer (and get you some additional revenues).

Las viviendas en Europa son caras. En España pago el triple de renta por la mitad del espacio que tendría en México. Por eso, la gente duda en comprar algo que tomaría espacio para guardar (y posiblemente no es algo que se usaría diario). Para hacer las cosas más sencillas (y baratas), creo que se podría utilizar el modelo de negocios conocido como "tiempo compartido". Se podrían compartir electrodomésticos que se utilizan ocasionalmente (como aspiradoras grandes, licuadoras para margaritas, waffleras, etc.). Se me ocurren dos formas de realizar esto:

1. Crear un sitio web donde las personas organicen sus propios grupos, establezcan sus propias necesidades de electrodomésticos y cobrar por suscripción. O...
2. Poner una tienda propia de renta (estilo Hertz para carros). Podrías empezar rentando cosas que ya tienes y pueden ser útiles para otras personas. Si tienes una tienda de electrodomésticos, podrías agregar este modelo de negocios a tu oferta y así incrementar tus líneas de ingresos.

Retro fitness club / Gimnasio retro

Every tuesday and thursday I attend a beginner aerobics class (because the last time I went before that was 7 years ago). The demographic is pretty varied: fifteen year olds to -I calculate- sixty something year olds, with most of us in the middle. The teacher is really cool and blasts up the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta (see video below), which is great for me. 

Still, I can see the faces of the more experienced a little disgruntled about the loudness (guess they're probably not too happy about the lyrics and music either). So the idea is to have a fitness club where the music is not so loud and the teachers play The Beatles, Olivia Newton John, Donna Summer or other retro musicians (see video below).

Potential entrepreneur profile: likes fitness, you could start with one class in a rented room and then go from there. If you already have a gym, you could allocate a schedule (early bird gym?).

You'll need: knowledge on cardio (CPR maybe?), space, a good music mix.

Cada martes y jueves voy a una clase de aerobics para principiantes (porque han pasado 7 años desde la última vez que fui). La clase es muy variada, desde chicas de 15 años a jóvenes de 60 y tantos (yo calculo); la mayoría estamos en algún punto intermedio. La maestra es muy buena y nos pone coreografías al ritmo de Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas y David Guetta (puedes ver un video abajo), que a mí me encantan.

Single portions supermarket / Supermercado con porciones individuales

Ok, so to start posting about my business ideas, I'll tell you about one I've had for years and think is a great opportunity for someone out there. The idea is a supermarket with single since portions, why? Because there's many of us who live alone or in a couple, we like to diversify in our meals and are willing to spend a little bit more on groceries. The problem is most packages are designed for families, which leaves us with 15 too many sushi sheets, so I end up not buying many things because I'm green and don't want to waste.


Potential entrepreneur profile: could be someone who already owns a convenience store, or someone with enough money to invest.


You'll need: industry knowledge, a good location, startup capital to finance stocking, salaries, permits, marketing.

Bueno, para empezar a compartir mis ideas de negocios, les diré de una que he tenido por años y que creo que es una buena oportunidad para alguien ahí afuera. La idea es un supermercado con porciones individuales, ¿por qué? Porque hay muchas personas que vivimos solos o en pareja, nos gusta variar en nuestra comida y estamos dispuestos a pagar un poco más en el supermercado. El problema es que la mayoría de los empaques están pensados para familias, lo cual nos deja con 15 hojas de sushi de más. Muchas veces termino no comprando algo que se me antoja porque prefiero no desperdiciar.

Recipe # 1 - Apple pie / Receta # 1 - Pay de manzana

I don't know a single person who doesn't like apple pie. I always thought they were misterious and hard to make, but I came across this recipe and I thought it looked easy enough to give it a try.
I added some chopped hazelnuts to the mix in step 2 to add some crunch, then served with vanilla ice cream. DELICIOUS!

No conozco una sola persona a quien no le guste el pay de manzana. Siempre había pensado que eran misteriosos y difíciles de hacer, pero encontré esta receta y pensé que no se veía tan complicado, así que la probé. La receta está en inglés, así que les paso la traducción:

Ingredientes

• 2¾ tazas de harina, más lo necesario para espolvorear
• ¼ cucharadita de sal
• 2 barras de mantequilla
• ¼ taza de agua helada
• 6 manzanas grandes, peladas, cortadas en pedazos o rebanadas
• 2 cucharadas de jugo fresco de limón
• 1 taza de azúcar
• ¼ cucharadita de canela
• 1 cucharada de mantequilla

Instrucciones

1. En un procesador de alimentos, mezcle 2½ tazas de harina y la sal. Agregue las 2 barras de mantequilla y pulse hasta que se formen bolitas del tamaño de chicharos. Poco a poco, vierta el agua helada hasta que se formen moronitas uniformes. Retire a una superficie y forme una "pelota". Divida la masa en 2 discos y refrigere hasta que la mezcla esté firme.
   
2. Precaliente el horno a 190°C. En un recipiente, agregue las manzanas, el jugo de limón, el azúcar, la canela y ¼ de taza harina.
   
3. En una superficie enharinada, estire la masa para formar una base redonda de aprox. 26 cm; colóquela en un plato para pay y humedezca el borde saliente con un poco de agua. Coloque las manzanas dentro y agregue la cucharada de mantequilla restante encima. Estire el segundo disco a aprox. 24 cm y acomódelo sobre el relleno. Presione las orillas de la masa para que se fundan y recorte el saliente para que queden solo 2 cm. Realice algunos cortes en la parte superior de la masa para que escape el vapor.
4. Cocine el pay en el centro del horno durante 1 hora y 10 minutos, hasta que la masa esté dorada. Cubra con aluminio el borde del pay para que no se queme. Deje enfriar antes de servir.

Yo agregué avellanas picadas a la mezcla de manzanas en el paso 2 para agregar algo crujiente. Lo serví con helado de vainilla. ¡DELICIOSO!

New year, new business, new blog, new classes. I'm starting this year with a BIG resolution list, here's a sample:

Año nuevo, negocio nuevo, blog nuevo, clases nuevas. Estoy iniciando el año con una larga lista de propósitos, aquí algunos ejemplos:

• Probar 50 recetas nuevas (tengo toda una colección que estoy decidida a completar)
• Leer al menos 12 libros no técnicos (novelas, filosofía, historia, etc.)
• Tomar unas vacaciones de verdad (playa, sol, relax)
• Correr medio maratón
• Ir al Oktoberfest o al Love Parade
• Aprender un idioma nuevo

My first post / Mi primer post

Ok, so this is my first real attempt at a blog. I had toyed with the idea for a while, and then came Twitter, so I deemed it unnecessary. But today, I had yet another business idea that will just go into my business-idea-for-when-I-have-time-and-money jar.

I thought it really is a shame to let ideas go to waste just because I’m not making them real, so I’ll go ahead and post them here, trusting readers around the world to take them, improve them, and send me a note on how your project is going. There’s lots of people out there who want to start a business and have no clue what to do, and since my master in Entrepreneurship at Lund University (that’s in Sweden), I can’t stop thinking about ideas or improvements on business models and so on.

And, since this is my blog, I'll also post some other things I like, such as interesting websites, technology, travel and cooking. So, hope you enjoy, write back if this is useful!

Pues, realmente este es mi primer blog. Había pensado en iniciar uno antes, pero luego llego Twitter y entonces la idea parecía un poco atrasada. Sin embargo, el día de hoy tuve otra idea de negocios que solo va a pasar a mi lista de “ideas de negocios para cuando tenga tiempo y dinero” y me pareció una lástima que solo porque yo no voy a realizarla, se quede sin hacerse realidad.

Por ello, voy a publicar mis ideas, confiando en que quienes las lean las tomen, las mejoren y me manden una nota diciendo cómo va el proyecto. Hay mucha gente allá afuera que quiere iniciar un negocio y no sabe qué hacer, y yo desde que estudié una maestría en Inicio de Negocios en la Universidad de Lund (en Suecia), no puedo dejar de pensar en ideas, o como mejorar negocios ya existentes o nuevos modelos de negocios.

Y como este es mi blog, también publicaré de otros temas que me interesan, como sitios interesantes, tecnologías, viajar y cocinar. Así que, espero que les guste y ¡escriban si les ayuda!
