Tips to be greener @ work / Formas de ser más "verde" en el trabajo

Every April, people around the world celebrate Earth Day, with some criticism because one day a year will not make a big difference in the environment. So, if like me, you want to do more everyday, why not start at work? We spend most of out time there and it's relatively easy to change into new, greener patterns. Here's some things you can do:

1. Recycle - set up recycling bins for paper, plastic, organics. Check with the local sanitation department how to manage the pick up. Buy recycled paper.
2. Use natural light - turn of the lights if the natural lighting is sufficient. Otherwise, try to get energy saving bulbs. If a room is not being used, lights should be off.
3. Unplug!
4. Don't print if it's not REALLY necessary. 
• The WorldWildlifeFund (WWF) came up with a document format which doesn't allow documents to be printed, use it if you consider the information you are sharing shouldn't be printed. 
• Double check what you print so there's no waste.
• Use a black & white palette to reduce ink waste.
• Print as draft to save ink.
5. Reuse - If you don't have the possibility to recycle paper, use both sides (you can set up a tray with paper to be reused). This way, you save paper and money.
6. Give customers the possibility to opt-out. Your company might be sending catalogs, offers and newsletters in mail format, but email offers the possibility to make this personalized, cheaper and more sustainable. Help clear our mailboxes from paper catalogs!
7. Make eco-friendly documents:
• Check out your margin settings - I read an article about how a University could save 120 thousand dollars in paper every year just by changing the settings in their documents to have smaller margins (imagine the amount of trees saved!). You just need to change the settings for default margins and you too can save pages for every document you print (to see how, check out this link). You can even propose making a company policy.
• If the document is meant to be printed, minimize the use of images and decorations.
• Use efficient fonts. New fonts like Calibri are meant to be read on the screen to minimize need for printing, so they are easier on the eye. If you need to print, choose a font like Century Gothic (which is supposed to be more printer efficient), or Arial Light (which takes less space).
• Don't use bold letters.
• Don't page break or skip pages (they are also annoying when you are reading).
• Use smaller fonts (12 is huge. I use 10 for content, 11 for subtitles, 12 for main titles).
• Use smaller space between paragraphs.
• Don't double space.
• Avoid using all-caps, it takes more space and it means you are raising your voice.
• Make company-wide templates using eco-friendly guidelines. Distribute electronically.
8. Carpool - You can start a campaign to see who at work lives nearby and group people to carpool. Most of the energy spent on vehicles is to move the car, not the people in it, make trips more efficient by sharing your car. Or use public transportation.
9. Use biodegradable cleaning supplies. Yes, they are more expensive, but think about how expensive water will be in a few years when we run out of it.
10. Motivate people:
• Try to make people aware of the impact of their actions. 
• Reward "green attitudes".
• Have an earth day. Organize events like book-swaps.
• Listen to suggestions on how to save energy or be greener. Apply the best ones.

Cada año en Abril se celebra el Día de la Tierra, con algunos criticando el hecho de que un día al año no va a tener un impacto real en el medio ambiente. Si quieres hacer algo para cambiar y hacer algo bueno por la tierra todos los días, ¿por qué no empezar en el trabajo? Pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo ahí y es relativamente fácil integrar nuevas (y más ecológicas) costumbres. Aquí hay algunas cosas que puedes hacer:

1. Reciclar - utilicen diferentes botes de basura para separar papel, plástico, deshechos orgánicos. Revisa con tu departamento de sanidad local cuál es el procedimiento para que retiren la basura separada. Compren papel reciclado.
2. Usar luz natural - apaguen las luces cuando la luz natural es suficiente. Otra opción es cambiar los focos por focos ahorradores. Si una habitación está vacía, las luces deberían estar apagadas.
3. ¡Desconecta!
4. Evita imprimir cuando realmente no se requiere. 
• La Asociación para la Defensa de la Naturaleza (WWF) diseñó un formato para archivos parecido al PDF pero que no permite imprimir.Utiliza este formato si consideras que el archivo que estás compartiendo no debería ser impreso. 
• Revisa antes de imprimir para evitar malgastar papel y tinta.
• Utiliza una paleta en blanco y negro para reducir el uso de tinta.
• Imprime en modo "borrador" para reducir el uso de tinta.
5. Reutiliza - Si no tienes la posibilidad de reciclar papel, utiliza ambos lados (también se puede configurar una bandeja para reutilizar papel). De esta forma, ahorras papel y dinero.
6. Da a tus clientes la posibilidad de elegir emails sobre correo. Es posible que tu empresa aún envíe catalogos, ofertas y noticias por correo, pero enviar correos electrónicos permite que tu comunicación sea personalizada, más barata y ecológica. Ayuda a limpiar los buzones de catálogos impresos.
7. Haz tus documentos más ecológicos:
• Revisa tu configuración de márgenes - leí un artículo acerca de cómo la Universidad de Penn State inició una campaña para minimizar el uso de papel que se tradujo en un ahorro de 120 mil dólares al año, sólo cambiando la configuración en los márgenes de sus documentos (¡imagina la cantidad de árboles que se salvaron!). Lo único que necesitas hacer es cambiar la configuración default de los márgenes y verás que también puedes ahorrar hojas en cada documento (para ver cómo cambiar los márgenes, sigue esta liga). Puedes incluso proponer que esta sea una política en la empresa.
• Si el documento que estás haciendo se va a imprimir, reduce la cantidad de imágenes y decoraciones.
• Utiliza tipos de letra eficientes para impresión. Los nuevos tipos de letra como Calibri están diseñados para ser leídos en pantalla, minimizando la necesidad de impresiones. Si vas a imprimir, elige un tipo de letra como Century Gothic (que en teoría usa más eficientemente la tinta), o Arial Light (que utiliza menos espacio).
• No utilices letras en "negrita".
• No utilices saltos de página o dejes páginas en blanco (además de gastar hojas, a veces son tediosas al leer).
• Utiliza tamaños de letra más pequeños (12 es muy grande. Yo uso 10 para contenidos, 11 para subtítulos, 12 para títulos).
• Minimiza el espacio entre párrafos.
• No utilices dobles espacios.
• Evita escribir en máyusculas, toma más espacio y significa que estás levantando la voz.
• Diseña una plantilla de documentos siguiendo lineamientos ecológicos. Distribuye electrónicamente.
8. Comparte el transporte - Puedes empezar una campaña para ver quiénes viven en la misma zona para compartir un automóvil. La mayor parte de la energía que se utiliza en los automóviles es para mover el carro, no las personas dentro; haz tus viajes más eficientes compartiendo el espacio. O utiliza transporte público.
9. Utiliza productos de limpieza biodegradables. Sí, son más caros, pero piensa en lo cara que será el agua cuando terminemos de contaminarla.
10. Motiva a los demás:
• Trata de concientizar a las personas del impacto de sus acciones. 
• Recompensa los "hábitos ecológicos".
• Celebren un Día de la Tierra. Organizen eventos como intercambio de libros.
• Escucha las sugerencias de cómo ahorrar energía o ser más ecológicos. Apliquen las mejores.

Cool business concepts / Ideas de negocio interesantes

Everyday we bump into things we see as ordinary because we are used to them, but as a foreigner, these might be cool concepts. I wanted to share some ideas that I've come across in the past months that I think would be appreciated in other contexts:

1. Frozen chopped onion / frozen chopped garlic: This idea is great for various reasons, people who don't use onion much can use what they need and store the rest without waste; they don't stink up your fridge and don't contaminate other flavors. Plus, frozen onion won't make you cry. This is the kind of thing that makes you want to pay a little more.
2. Bet machines: I had never seen this kind of machines, but here you can find them in most bars; the idea is that patrons can bet on soccer games (I'm not sure if only soccer, but you can adapt the idea to anything), they get a printed ticket and then go back to the machine to collect winnings.
3. Language learning on tv: There is a channel on cable where viewers can learn english, with different levels and even some where they can call in from home, I think this concept would work even for teaching people how to read and write.
4. News without presenters: There is a news channel where the news are narrated, but the images are from the news, there is no presenter, no set. I really like this concept because it's more objective and lets you draw your own conclusions.
5. After-hours public transportation: After the Metro system is closed, there are a few bus routes that service the zone where most night clubs and pubs are located, in Sweden they would even drop you off a little closer to home.
6. Convenience stores: Yes, this is a widespread concept, but in Taiwan they offer much more than your usual convenience store, they were packed with copy machines, a business card maker (really handy!) and they even sold socks and undies (you never know when you might need them).

Cada día nos encontramos con diferentes objetos y eventos que consideramos ordinarios porque estamos acostumbrados a ellos, pero como extranjeros, estos podrían ser conceptos muy interesantes. Me he encontrado varias ideas estos últimos meses que creo que merecen la pena ser compartidos, podrían ser apreciados en otros contextos:

1. Cebolla picada congelada / Ajo picado congelado: Esta idea es muy buena por varias razones, para empezar, las personas que cocinan con poca cebolla pueden utilizar sólo lo que necesitan sin desperdicio, además no producen mal olor en el refrigerador y no contaminan otros sabores. Además, la cebolla congelada no te hace llorar. Este es el tipo de productos por los que yo estoy dispuesta a pagar un poco más.
2. Máquinas de apuestas: Nunca había visto este tipo de máquinas, pero aquí se pueden encontrar en muchos bares; la idea es que los clientes pueden apostar en partidos de fútbol (no se si también en otros deportes, pero se podría adaptar a cualquier tema), reciben un boleto impreso y pueden recoger sus ganancias en la misma máquina.
3. Cursos de idiomas por televisión: Hay una serie de programas donde los espectadores pueden aprender inglés, con diferentes niveles de dificultad e incluso algunos programas en vivo para que las personas hablen por teléfono y resuelvan sus dudas. Creo que este concepto funcionaría incluso para enseñar a las personas a leer y escribir.
4. Noticieros sin presentadores: Hay un canal de noticias donde se narran los  hechos, pero las imágenes son de las noticias en sí, no hay presentadores ni un set de televisión. Me gusta el concepto porque me parece más objetivo y te permite sacar tus propias conclusiones.
5. Transporte público en horario nocturno: Después de que cierra el metro, hay algunas rutas de camión que dan servicio a las áreas donde se concentran los clubes nocturnos y bares; en Suecia incluso te pueden dejar un poco más cerca de donde vives.
6. Tiendas de conveniencia: Sí, sé que este es un concepto que ya se ve en todas partes, pero en Taiwán ofrecen mucho más que las tiendas de conveniencia "normales", algunas ofrecen servicio de copiadoras, tienen maquinas para imprimir tarjetas de presentación (¡bastante útil!) e incluso venden canzoncillos y calcetines (nunca sabes cuando vas a necesitar un par nuevo).

Starting a business as a foreigner / Empezando un negocio como extranjero

So the current plan is to live in Bilbao for at least another 15 months, which seems like a good opportunity to start a business. The steps I believe are needed to start a business are:

1. Decide what your business will be (preferably based on the "sweet spot" where your financial capabilities, your skills and the needs of society meet).
2. Sketch your business model (how are you gonna make money? who's gonna pay for whatever it is you are selling?). (Depending on the complexity of the business, you may want to go as far as making a business plan with market research, industry analysis, financial projections and all)
3. Register your economic activities in the incumbent government office.
4. Start getting clients (you'll probably need a beta client to test your business model and tweak your offer).
5. Work
6. Work
7. Work
8. .....

I decided on a business concept, I have an idea of my business model, and I wanted to register to start working here in the Basque Country (in Spain). I went into the Department of Migration and Work website to review the process of registering as an independent worker. 

The first step is taking a course to make a business plan, then there will be an evaluation of the feasibility of my idea; then I can present the plan, along with a resume and application. Then, after 3 months of my application, I have to go back to my home country and wait for the permit.

The office where they provide the business plan format gave me an appointment in 5 weeks. This means that, if you are a foreigner who wants to work independently, you need to consider at least 4 months and a plane ticket before you can start your business. I'll keep you posted in the progress.

UPDATE: I just got a call today (april 5th) and they gave me an earlier date! New appointment is in 9 days, which is about 16 days before the original date. This are good news, things are moving!

UPDATE 2: Had the meeting, they told me I had to go to another department to ask for a visa change. Turns out, I can't start a business in Spain. So plan B now, Internet here I go!

Mi plan a corto plazo es vivir en Bilbao al menos 15 meses más, lo cual parece una buena oportunidad para iniciar un negocio. Desde mi perspectiva, los pasos necesarios para empezar un negocio son:

1. Decidir cuál va a ser el concepto de tu negocio (de preferencia basado en la conjunción donde se encuentran tus habilidades, tu capacidad económica y una necesidad de la sociedad).
2. Diseñar tu modelo de negocios (¿cómo vas a generar ingresos?, ¿quién va a pagar lo que estás vendiendo?). (Dependiendo de la complejidad del negocio, podrías decidir hacer un plan de negocios, incluyendo hacer una investigación de mercado, análisis de la industria, proyecciones financieras, etc.)
3. Registrar tu actividad económica en la oficina de gobierno pertinente.
4. Conseguir los primeros clientes (posiblemente necesites un cliente de prueba, para comprobar tu modelo de negocios y mejorar tu oferta al mercado).
5. Trabajar

Ya tengo decidido mi concepto de negocio, tengo una idea del modelo de negocios, y decidí empezar a revisar el proceso para registrarme y empezar mis actividades económicas en el País Vasco (en España). Ingresé en el sitio web del Departamento de Migración y Trabajo para averiguar qué tenía que hacer para registrarme como autónomo (trabajador independiente). 

El primer paso es tomar un curso para hacer un plan de negocios, después habrá una evaluación de factibilidad de mi idea; luego puedo presentar el plan, junto con mi currículum y una aplicación. Después de 3 meses, debo volver a mi país y esperar el permiso.

La oficina donde tienen el formato del plan de negocios me dio una cita en 5 semanas. Esto quiere decir que si eres un extranjero que quiere empezar un negocio, necesitas considerar al menos 4 meses y un boleto de avión antes de poder empezar a trabajar. Los mantendré al tanto del progreso.

ACTUALIZACIÓN: Recibí una llamada el día de hoy (abril 5) y me dieron una nueva fecha en 9 días, que son casi 2 semanas antes de la fecha original. Estas son buenas noticias, ¡estamos avanzando!

ACTUALIZACIÓN 2: Tuve la reunión y me dijeron que tenía que ir a otro departamento a pedir un cambio de visa. Resulta que no puedo abrir un negocio en España. Así que ahora continuaremos con el Plan B: Internet, ¡aquí voy!

Personalized chocolate bars / Barras de chocolate personalizadas

Recently I've noticed a new wave of "choose your ingredients" bars (salads, frozen yoghurt, wok, pizza), and I was thinking there should be a similar concept in chocolate bars. There's tons of options you can choose from and there might be a combination you'd like to try but isn't available on the market.

I know it's possible to make the bars because they sell the chocolate to melt and with a good freezer, the bar could be ready in minutes (maybe this could be mixed with an online ordering system, say you plan to go watch a movie and are in the mood for a 70% dark chocolate with cranberries and almonds, buy the tickets online, order the chocolate bar and you are set).

The entrepreneur probablye needs to be into sweets and have a good eye for combinations to suggest to clients and make a good menu. Some ingredients I think you should have:

En los últimos años he notado una nueva ola de barras para "elegir nuestros propios ingredientes" (ensaladas, yoghurt congelado, comida asiática, pizza), y estaba pensando que debería existir este concepto aplicado a las barras de chocolate. Hay muchas opciones a elegir y posiblemente hay una combinación que has pensado y no está disponible en el mercado.

Sé que es posible hacer estas barras porque venden el chocolate para derretir, y con un buen congelador podría estar lista en minutos (posiblemente sería bueno combinar esta idea con un sistema de ordenes en línea, digamos que planeas ir al cine y se te antoja un chocolate 70% con arándanos y almendras; entras a Internet, compras tus boletos, ordenas tu chocolate y está listo).

El emprendedor posiblemente necesita ser un entusiasta de los dulces y tener un buen ojo para combinar sabores, hacer sugerencias y diseñar un buen menú. Algunos ingredientes que considero debería tener:

Basic women office wardrobe / Guardaropa básico de oficina para mujeres

As part of my "non technical reading" this year, I chose The Lucky Shopping Manual by Kim France and Andrea Linett. I enjoyed the reading, the tips and the pictures, but having worked in an office as a recent graduate and starting a business (meaning: not a lot of money to buy all those pieces), I have a list of my own that can help you look professional:

Must haves
1 dark suit (gray, black or navy)
1 fitted white shirt (this means make sure it looks great on you. If you really love one but could fit better, take it to a tailor)
1 fitted black shirt or 1 fitted striped or color shirt
1 pair of formal trousers in neutral color (black, gray, navy, brown, beige, white)
1 pair of dark formal shoes (height and style depends on the industry)
1 cardigan (something you can combine with all other items)
1 Blazer in a neutral color
1 pair of dark denim jeans (NOT skinny or super low rise!) for casual fridays
1 pair of dark ballet flats for casual fridays
Pearl studs
Work bag / purse (big enough to carry stuff you might need during the day: laptop, make up essentials, notebook / agenda, pen, mobile phone, paper tissue, etc.)

Nice to have
One more formal trouser in neutral color
Pencil skirt in neutral color
Pashmina (it's usually cold in the office spaces, so you need to be prepared)
1 dress you can layer under (so it works for summer and winter)
1 evening dress (a.k.a. "the little black dress", though I do suggest a not-so-little for office events) or 1 fancy shirt you can wear with the trousers or the skirt (you have to be prepared for office events)
1 winter coat

The wild cards (items you might change more often)
Blouses (I recommend having at least 2, your color and shape to choose)
Tees (I recommend having at least 2; not the ones you use to jog, something like this looks great with trousers and the blazer, or the skirt and the cardigan)
Small, professional looking earrings (leave the big, flashy earrings for evening outs)
Seasonal accesories

Make up
It's important to look pulled together, but not like you are going to a bar, so keep it simple and nice. The basics are:
Skin - first, moisturize, then use pressed powder to battle shine and even out the skin tone.
Eyebrows - define them with a pencil or powder to frame your face. Tweeze out hair out of place.
Eyes - use concealer if you have dark circles, curl your eyelashes and use one coat of water resistant mascara.
Blush - just enough to get color. The color depends on your skin tone.
Lips - use a nice shade that matches your skin.

Como parte de mis lecturas "no técnicas" este año, escogí La guía de Lucky para comprar de Kim France y Andrea Linett. Me gustaron la redacción, los consejos y las fotografías, pero habiendo trabajado en una empresa recién graduada e iniciado un negocio (ambas significan que no había mucho presupuesto para comprar todas las piezas del armario que mencionan), tengo una lista que había realizado yo misma con piezas que puedes combinar para verte profesional:

Piezas básicas
1 traje oscuro (gris, negro o azul marino)
1 camisa blanca con buen ajuste (esto quiere decir que debes asegurarte que el corte te queda a la medida. Si encuentras una que realmente te guste pero podría quedarte mejor, llévala a un sastre)

1 par de pantalones formales en color neutro (gris, negro, café, beige, blanco o azul marino)

Aretes pequeños que se vean profesionales (deja los aretes largos y brillantes para tus salidas de fin de semana)

Maquillaje
Es importante que te veas arreglada, pero no como si fueras a un bar, así que necesitas mantener tu maquillaje sencillo y limpio. Para un maquillaje básico necesitas:
Piel - primero, humecta tu cara; luego, utiliza polvo compacto para combatir el brillo y darle el mismo tono a toda to cara.
Cejas - defínelas con un lápiz o polvo para darle un marco a tu cara. Utiliza las pinzas para remover cualquier cabello que esté fuera de lugar.
Ojos - utiliza un correctos si tienes círculos oscuros, enchina tus pestañas y luego utiliza una capa de rímel a prueba de agua.
Rubor - utiliza sólo lo necesario para darte color. El color adecuado depende de tu tono de piel.
Labios - utiliza un tono sencillo que haga juego con tu tono de piel.

Turn abandoned mall spaces into business incubators / Transformar centros comerciales abandonados en incubadoras de negocios

In many growing cities, it is normal for "hip" places to be quickly replaced by a newer option. I've seen it happen often: you go to a once cool place, and is abandoned and dying. I think it would be good to turn this spaces into incubators for several reasons:

1. They are normally "easy to get there" places (city centric or by public transportation, which helps both the entrepreneurs and the clients). 
2. The infrastructure is already there: parking spaces, electricity, bathrooms, etc.
3. People (potential clients) are familiar with the location, so it's an easy reference (we are located in Mall X where the Store Y used to be).
4. The owners of the building can keep getting an income from the space (yes, it may be less than what they used to make, but it wouldn't be a total waste)
5. Owners would be promoting entrepreneurship. This is the most important one: if you want to increase the purchasing power of a community, entrepreneurship is the way to go, it creates jobs and attracts investment (it can also make them look good by doing something nice).
6. It can also be an opportunity for other kind of businesses to set up in the mall (coffee shops, day care, office supplies, you name it).

I think this is a good balance for people who are looking to start a company and people who have spaces that aren't being used.

En muchas ciudades en crecimiento es normal que los lugares de moda sean rápidamente reemplazados por nuevas opciones. Lo he visto suceder con frecuencia: vas a un lugar que solía ser popular y lo encuentras abandonado y decayendo. Creo que sería muy bueno transformar estos lugares en incubadoras de negocios por varias razones:

1. Son lugares de "fácil acceso" (son céntricos o se puede llegar en transporte público, lo que es de gran ayuda para los emprendedores y los clientes).

6. Puede ser una oportunidad para que otros negocios se establezcan en el centro comercial (cafeterías, guarderías, papelerías, lo que se les ocurra).

Creo que es un buen equilibrio para quienes buscan empezar una empresa y quienes tienen espacios que no se están utilizando.

Fictional business you could make true! / Negocios ficticios, ¡que podrías realizar!

A while back I read a book called "The Club of Queer Trades" by Gilbert Keith Chesterton, in which a man discovers various businesses that were unique and not based on any other businesses already existent before. I thought some of the businesses were not a bad idea and perhaps you could also take some inspiration from these and other fictional businesses. Here's some examples:

From "The Club of Queer Trades" (spoiler alert: if you want to read the book, skip over to the next section)

• Adventure agency: if you've seen the movie "The Game", you know the concept. It's about crafting adventures or experiences for the clients, providing thrill.
• Delay agency: another service that allows clients to ask to distract someone (if, for example, you want your annoying colleague to not go to a crucial meeting, they'll distract him for as long as you pay).
• A "make you look witty" service: Here, the client pays to be trained to look smart or witty in social setting (so to make you popular). The service includes an actor that will help you get to the conversation points you practiced.
• Unusual living spaces: This is sort of an architecture firm that creates living spaces in unusual locations, like atop a tree. For clients who wish to live closer to nature.

From the movie Hitch

• A personalized "love" service. To help people get a chance with a potential life mate.

From Fight Club

• Well, a fight club. Another interesting service I've seen is "ZombieFit" (this actually exists), where people can train and workout to learn how to escape from zombies.

From The Simpsons

• Duff beer (already being done somewhere in the world)
• A store for the left handed 
• Pre-trained pet dogs

From The Island

• Interactive directories (specially in tourist-y cities)
• Ice cream cart (or any other food cart) that takes credit cards

From The Fifth Element

• Bunker style micro apartments
• Automated driver's licences
• Inter-car communication device 

From Minority Report

• Arcade venue for grown-ups (there's also one in Sex and the City, but I'm not sure it really exists). Another concept I liked is one I saw in Stockholm: coloring books for grown ups (complex drawings, vintage themes like Star Wars).

From The Jetsons

• Use of augmented reality to look better on video calls
• Moving walkways for private housing 

Let me know if you remember any other cool fictional concept (FEASIBLE, I know a teleporter would be great, but technology is not here yet. Though if you do develop it, you could be very very rich).

Hace algún tiempo leí un libro llamado "El club de los negocios raros" de Gilbert Keith Chesterton (puedes descargarlo en la liga), en el que un hombre descubre varios negocios que eran completamente nuevos y únicos, no estaban basados en ningún otro negocio que ya existiera antes de ellos. • Uso de realidad aumentada para verte bien en las video-llamadas
• Uso de bandas transportadoras en las casas 

Avísame si recuerdas algún otro concepto ficticio interesante (y que sea POSIBLE, sé que un teletransportador sería muy bueno, pero la tecnología aún no llega ahí. Por supuesto, si lo desarrollas, podrías hacerte muy muy rico).

Easy Movie Theater / Cine fácil

I lived in Sweden a year and I've been living in Spain four months now. And in all that time, I haven't been to the movies once. It's just too expensive for students or people on a budget (like entrepreneurs). I think there is a way to reduce overhead and make it cheaper for people. I think people would go even more. The idea is to create an "Easy" (borrowed from EasyJet and EasyHotels) Movie Theater where people could buy their tickets online, print them, use a barcode scanner to get into the theater (or you could use ATMs to sell the tickets at the entrance), and the concesion stand could be a 7/11 (or another convenience store chain) outside the theater.

The advantages of this is that you could save a lot of money in salaries and it would also be possible to extend the service hours (midnight shows, open on holidays, you get the idea).  

Some time ago I had also thought about having a People's Choice day, where people could choose the movie one day of the week, or the month. It could be old movies (like The Exorcist, StarWars, Back to the Future) that we would love to watch on the big screen again.

If you want to start this business, I think an easier way to do this would be to rent a facility, buy some IKEA sofas, a projector and a good surround system and get started with the oldies, there's definitely a market. Then go from there!

Viví en Suecia durante un año y he estado viviendo en España por cuatro meses; en todo este tiempo, no he ido al cine una sola vez. Simplemente es demasiado caro para estudiantes o personas que viven con un presupuesto limitado (como los emprendedores). Me parece que hay formas de reducir los gastos fijos y así lograr captar más mercado. La idea es crear un Cine "Fácil" (como EasyJet, Vivaaerobus, etc.) donde las personas pudieran comprar sus boletos en línea, imprimirlos y utilizar un lector de código de barras para entrar (o incluso podrían ser cajeros en la entrada) y se tuviera un 7/11 (u otra cadena de tiendas de conveniencia) afuera del teatro para comprar dulces, palomitas, refrescos, etc. 

La ventaja de esto es que podrías ahorrar mucho en salarios y también sería posible extender el horario de servicio (funciones de media noche, abrir en festivos). 

Hace algún tiempo también había pensado que sería bueno que los cines ofrecieran cine a la carta una noche a la semana o al mes, donde las personas pudieran votar para elegir una película que les gustaría volver a ver en la pantalla grande (como El Exorcista, La Guerra de las Galaxias, Volver al futuro). 

Si quieres empezar este negocio, creo que una forma más sencilla sería empezar sería rentar un local, comprar sillones de IKEA, un proyector, un buen sistema de sonido y empezar con un club de cine (podría ser con películas clásicas), en definitiva hay un mercado para esto. ¡Y sigue desde ahí! 

Mobile gym / Gimnasio móvil

Companies like Google and Facebook pamper their employees with super comfortable work spaces, which include cafeterias, play rooms, gyms and more. Nevertheless, most companies around the world don't have the financial capabilities to offer these perks. But what if you could rent a mobile gym? You could serve several companies in one geographical area by distributing available times and companies would gain happier, healthier employees.

The idea is to equip a trailer or truck with basic training machines and a locker room (where people can shower and go back to work) and have trainers to aid gym-goers. The investment would probably be a little less than a regular gym, and if you are a trainer (if you are, for example, an aerobics, yoga, pilates or kickbox teacher) you could start by offering individual courses and go from there!

Empresas como Google y Facebook ponen la barra muy alta para las demás empresas en el mundo en cuanto a cómo consienten a sus empleados, les ofrecen instalaciones cómodas, cafeterías, áreas de ocio, gimnasios y más. Sin embargo, la mayoría de las empresas alrededor del mundo no tienen la capacidad financiera para ofrecer estos beneficios a sus empleados. Pero, podría haber una opción: rentar gimnasios móviles, asignando horarios a las diferentes empresas. De esta forma, varias empresas en un área geográfica delimitada podrían beneficiarse con empleados más sanos y contentos.

La idea es equipar un trailer o camión con máquinas de entrenamiento y un vestuario (donde los empleados puedan tomar un baño antes de regresar a trabajar), además de entrenadores que asistan a los deportistas. La inversión sería posiblemente un poco menos que abrir un gimnasio normal, y si eres un entrenador profesional (de aerobics, yoga, pilates, kickbox, etc.), podrías empezar ofreciendo cursos individuales e ¡ir creciendo!

Garlic saver / Salva-ajos

My husband and I like to cook, sometime we make chicken soup or other meals which include garlic in the recipe, but then you have to locate the clove to avoid bitting it. I think it would be nice to have a garlic saver to make it easier to pull the garlic from the pot with something similar to the tea infusers (example here).

I think the mesh should be a little bigger and you can live without the little chain, it's just to make it easier to locate.

A mi esposo y a mi nos gusta cocinar; a veces hacemos cosas como caldo de pollo, el cual incluye ajo en la cocción, pero después tienes que localizarlo y retirarlo antes de servir para evitar morderlo. Creo que sería una buena idea tener un salva-ajos para ayudarte a sacar el ajo de la comida, algo parecido a los infusores de té (algo como esto).

Me parece que se tendrían que hacer algunos ajustes, como que la malla sea más grande y posiblemente no necesite la cadena. Es solo para facilitar localizar y retirar.

Rain detector / Detector de lluvia

Imagine you have clothes hanging to dry, then it slowly starts to rain, but you're watching tv or listening to music on your iPod (or iPhone), and when you realize, the rain has started to pour. I know in the States most people have a dryer, but here in Bilbao there's not a lot of space and the electricity is expensive, so many of us have to hang dry our clothes. Also, it rains a lot. Sometimes very unexpectedly. I would very gladly purchase a rain detector (with an alarm), that would beep when wet, or if you wanna make it smarter, beep when wet AND have clothes hanging AND I'm home.

I guess it could have some additional uses, maybe doing some research somewhere where it rains a lot you could find other uses for it.

Imagina que tienes tu ropa en el tendedero para que se seque; tu estás viendo televisión o escuchando música en tu iPod (o iPhone), y cuando te das cuenta, ya está lloviendo a cántaros. Sé que en Estados Unidos la gran mayoría de las personas tienen secadoras, pero aquí en Bilbao no hay mucho espacio para poner una y la electricidad es costosa, por lo que la mayoría de las personas tenemos que colgar nuestra ropa al sol. También llueve mucho, a veces inesperadamente. Yo gustosamente compraría un detector de lluvia que me avisara cuando se moje; incluso mejor si es un poco inteligente y avise cuando: se moja Y tengo ropa tendida Y estoy en casa.

Creo que este detector podría tener otros usos, solo habría que hacer un poco de investigación en alguna ciudad donde llueva mucho.

If you've ever been living in a hospital with a relative, you will probably understand this concept. Most of the times, we get there unexpectedly and have to stay there with someone. In public hospitals, sometimes you even have to bring your own supplies for you and the patient. And for private hospitals, you may find some of these in the gift shop, but they close! So, I think it would be good to have a vending machine with the following:

• Rubber slippers (so patients can take a shower)
• Disposable slippers (for visitors who need to change their shoes)
• Hand saniters
• Toilet paper
• Paper tissues (like Kleenex)
• Qtips
• Toothbrush
• Toothpaste
• Soap
• Combs
• Deodorant
• Wet wipes
• Inflatable pillows
• Aspirin
• Weight pillow (needed to weigh down the patient)

Take a foreign concept! / ¡Toma una idea de otro país!

Far too often I find myself thinking: this would work great back home! So I snap a photo and put it on my list. Here are some examples of things I've seen and that could work in other settings (maybe where you live!). So take a look, get inspired and adapt!

1. Coloring books for grown ups (yes, some people like to color! I guess it could be therapeutic)
2. Warm cookie delivery (sort of like Domino's, but with hand made cookies)
3. High end hand made cosmetics (like Lush. Latinamerican countries have many natural resources and it could be also an organic, fair trade company)
4. High end convenience stores (I saw this in Paris, across the street from the Pompidou, it's great because you have better quality and it's quick to shop, good for busy business areas)
5. In Spain, the IKEA store in Barakaldo offers van rentals. I didn't see this in Sweden, but it would be great to have them!
6. 24 hour gym.People get inside using a card and code.
7. Chocolate with churros (first time I read this, I thought it was a misspell, in Mexico we have churros with chocolate, check out the picture below. I think this would rock in Mexico, maybe also in your  country people like chocolate and fried dough)

8. Convenience store in a vending machine (no employees full time, only delivery people. no place to clean up, less chance to get robbed)

Me pasa con frecuencia que veo un negocio y pienso que sería genial si alguien lo llevara a México, así que le tomo una foto y lo agrego a mi lista. Aquí les paso algunos ejemplos de negocios que creo que funcionarían en otros ambientes(¡posiblemente funcionarían donde vives tú!). Así que checa estas opciones, toma un poco de inspiración y ¡adapta la idea a tu mercado!

1. Libros de colorear para adultos (sí, a mucha gente le gusta colorear. Supongo que puede ser desestresante)
2. Galletitas calientes a domicilio (algo como Domino's Pizza, pero con galletas hechas a mano)
3. Línea de cosméticos de lujo hechos a mano (como Lush. Muchos países Latinoamericanos tienen recursos naturales, incluso podría tener el valor agregado de ser orgánico o de comercio justo)
4. Tiendas de conveniencia de lujo (ví una tienda así en Paris, frente al museo Pompidou, es interesante porque tiene productos de mejor calidad y es rápido para comprar, me parece una buena idea para áreas de negocio con muchos ejecutivos con prisa)
5. En España, la tienda IKEA de Barakaldo ofrece servicio de renta de camionetas tipo van. Nunca ví algo así en Suecia (lugar de origen de IKEA), pero me parece que sería algo muy útil.
6. Gimnasio abierto 24 horas. Los clientes entran utilizando una tarjeta y un código secreto.
7. Chocolate con churros (la primera vez que leí esto, pensé que estaba mal escrito, en México tenemos churros rellenos de chocolate, pero checa la foto. Creo que esto funcionaría en México, posiblemente en tu país a la gente también le gusta el chocolate y la masa frita)

8. Tiendas de conveniencia en una máquina expendedora (no necesitas empleados de tiempo completo, solo personal de entrega; no hay mucho que limpiar, menos posibilidades de un asalto)

Robot shopping cart / Carrito de compras robot

The world's population is aging and every day people's life span is increased. This brings a LOT of opportunities for new businesses, but in this post I'll only tell you about one. In Sweden we were living in the suburbs, many of our neighbors were elderly and we all use the public transport for our daily chores. Whenever we went to the supermarket, I watched frail ladies bend to put their groceries in their carts (and I presume they had to do this all over at home to put things away). I know there are robots which function enough to follow a person and to go up and down.

So this business idea is for someone who knows about mechanics, robotics, engineering or something in between. Make a cart, kind of like this one, but with the capability to follow their owner, and go up and down to make it easier to put and pull things. There is a good market and there will be a bigger one in a few years. Hey, I'd totally buy it!

La población del mundo está envejeciendo y cada día la esperanza de vida aumenta. Esto trae MUCHAS oportunidades para nuevos negocios, pero en esta publicación solamente discutiré una. Vivía en un suburbio de Suecia donde la mayoría de nuestros vecinos eran personas mayores y todos utilizábamos el transporte público para realizar tareas diarias. Cada vez que iba al supermercado, veía a viejecitas frágiles agachándose para guardar sus compras (y te aseguro que lo volvían a hacer en casa para guardarlas). Sé que hay robots lo suficientemente funcionales para realizar funciones básicas como seguir a alguien o moverse de arriba a abajo.

Esta idea de negocios es para alguien que sepa de mecánica, robótica, ingeniería o alguna combinación de esto. Hagan un carrito (algo como esto) que tenga la capacidad de seguir a su dueño, subir y bajar para facilitar poner y sacar cosas de ahí. Ya hay un buen mercado para esto, y te aseguro que habrá más en unos cuantos años. Oye, ¡yo lo compraría!

All year round seasonal pastry shop / Tienda de pastelillos estacionales

When I was living in Sweden, I noticed they have a variety of seasonal pastries that, come the season, are available everywhere. Which is great if you live there, but if you're visiting, you just hear about these amazing pastries and miss the chance to taste them. Examples:

Saffron bun	Semla

I guess in many countries, the same thing happens, there are some special or traditional recipes you can only get a limited time a year (in Sweden this was true even for doughnuts!). But maybe there is an opportunity to sell traditional treats for tourists, and even post explanations about the traditions as a decoration, what do you think? Which traditional (and limited time) treats would you like to see year round?

Going back to the being green and reading, I do think there is an opportunity for a store (or even a vending machine, like redbox) in airports that rent out stuff you might need waiting in the airport, in flight or during your vacations (waterproof books for the beach, for example). It could also be a buy with option to rent, let me explain: you buy a book, read it during your vacation, then when going back, you return the book and get cash back.

Another rental option could be for DVD players, portable games or tablet computers with some movies loaded on them to kill some time during the wait.

Potential entrepreneur profile: You have cash to invest in equipment, rental space and insurance.

You'll need: This business is all about location, location, location!

Regresando al tema de ser "ecológico" y leer, creo que hay una oportunidad para una tienda (podría incluso ser un dispensador automático, como las utilizadas por redbox) en los aeropuertos donde se puedan rentar objetos para utilizar durante la espera, el vuelo o las vacaciones (libros a prueba de agua para las vacaciones en la playa, por ejemplo). Podría ser también una compra con opción a renta, te explico: el cliente compra el libro, lo utiliza durante sus vacaciones y cuando vaya de regreso, puede devolver el libro y  recuperar parte de su inversión.

Otros artículos para rentar: reproductores de DVD portátiles, consolas de videojuego portátiles, computadoras tipo tablet con algunas películas pre-cargadas para ver durante la espera.

Peer to peer book rental website / Sitio de renta de libros entre particulares

Imagine a mix breed between Netflix and eBay, but for books. I love books, but sometimes it aches me to pay (in the last case 22 EUR) to read a book I know I'll only read once and then dust away in my bookshelf (or in an obscure storage box). There's still a great amount of people who like to read books in a printed format, but this would have the added benefit of also being "green" (less books printed). To make it even greener, you could set up reading clubs where the idea is to exchange the goods locally.

Potential entrepreneur profile: someone who loves books, paired with someone who knows how to setup and mantain a website.

You'll need: a website, books to get started.

Me encantan los libros, pero a veces me duele pagar (en el ultimo ejemplo, 22 Euros) por comprar un libro que solo voy a leer una vez y después se quedará empolvando en el librero (o en una caja de almacenamiento en algún rincón). Todavía hay mucho público para los libros en formato impreso y esto tendría el beneficio agregado de ser "verde" (menor necesidad de libros impresos). Para hacerlo aún más ecológico, podrías agregar en el sitio una sección de clubes locales donde las personas de la misma zona puedan intercambiar libros entre ellos.

Perfil del emprendedor potencial: alguien que le gusten mucho los libros, con alguien que sepa hacer y mantener un sitio web.

Time-share for appliances / Tiempo compartido de electrodomésticos

Living spaces in Europe are expensive, in Spain I pay three times as much for an apartment here than I would in Mexico... for half the space. So, when it comes to storing stuff, there's not much space to waste. So, storing appliances you rarely use is something to consider carefully. To make things easier (and cheaper), I was thinking about a business idea: time share appliances. You know, stuff like really big vacuum cleaners, maybe a bread maker, a margarita blender. This could be done in two ways:

1. Set up a website where people can create their own groups, set their own goals, maybe charge for subscription. Or,
2. Set up your own store, rent your own appliances (like Hertz does with cars). You could even start by renting out stuff you alredy have and might be useful for others. Even better if you currently have an appliance store, this could add a business model to your offer (and get you some additional revenues).

Las viviendas en Europa son caras. En España pago el triple de renta por la mitad del espacio que tendría en México. Por eso, la gente duda en comprar algo que tomaría espacio para guardar (y posiblemente no es algo que se usaría diario). Para hacer las cosas más sencillas (y baratas), creo que se podría utilizar el modelo de negocios conocido como "tiempo compartido". Se podrían compartir electrodomésticos que se utilizan ocasionalmente (como aspiradoras grandes, licuadoras para margaritas, waffleras, etc.). Se me ocurren dos formas de realizar esto:

1. Crear un sitio web donde las personas organicen sus propios grupos, establezcan sus propias necesidades de electrodomésticos y cobrar por suscripción. O...
2. Poner una tienda propia de renta (estilo Hertz para carros). Podrías empezar rentando cosas que ya tienes y pueden ser útiles para otras personas. Si tienes una tienda de electrodomésticos, podrías agregar este modelo de negocios a tu oferta y así incrementar tus líneas de ingresos. 

Retro fitness club / Gimnasio retro

Every tuesday and thursday I attend a beginner aerobics class (because the last time I went before that was 7 years ago). The demographic is pretty varied: fifteen year olds to -I calculate- sixty something year olds, with most of us in the middle. The teacher is really cool and blasts up the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta (see video below), which is great for me. 

Still, I can see the faces of the more experienced a little disgruntled about the loudness (guess they're probably not too happy about the lyrics and music either). So the idea is to have a fitness club where the music is not so loud and the teachers play The Beatles, Olivia Newton John, Donna Summer or other retro musicians (see video below).

Potential entrepreneur profile: likes fitness, you could start with one class in a rented room and then go from there. If you already have a gym, you could allocate a schedule (early bird gym?).

You'll need: knowledge on cardio (CPR maybe?), space, a good music mix.

Cada martes y jueves voy a una clase de aerobics para principiantes (porque han pasado 7 años desde la última vez que fui). La clase es muy variada, desde chicas de 15 años a jóvenes de 60 y tantos (yo calculo); la mayoría estamos en algún punto intermedio. La maestra es muy buena y nos pone coreografías al ritmo de Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas y David Guetta (puedes ver un video abajo), que a mí me encantan.

Pero siempre noto que algunas jóvenes con mucha experiencia no están demasiado contentas con el alto volúmen (posiblemente tampoco les fascina la letra de las canciones y el ritmo de la música). La idea sería tener un gimnasio donde el volúmen de la música no sea tan alto y las clases se den al ritmo de los Beatles, Olivia Newton John, Donna Summer u otros músicos retro.

Perfil del emprendedor potencial: le gusta el acondicionamiento físico, podrías empezar con una clase en un espacio en renta y crecer el negocio de ahí. Si ya tienes un gimnasio, podrías dedicar un horario para poner música retro.

Necesitarías: conocimiento de entrenamientos cardio (¿RCP, por si acaso?), espacio, una buena selección de música.
